Monet is in!
Designers at Louis Vuitton have evidently cottoned onto the success of eatsleepdoodle's Monet placemats, as they've created their own homage to the great artist.
The 'LV' Masters collection celebrates some of the most renowned artists in the world. Works by Leonardo Da Vinci, Turner, Manet, Gauguin, Van Gogh, Fragonard and Rubens are seen brandished across the familiar handbag designs we've come to know so well (whether on the arm of Victoria Beckham, or the bargain street stalls along Oxford Street).
Louis Vuitton certainly aren’t the first, Yves Saint Laurent’s Mondrian Shift Dress of 1965 hit the stratosphere of fashion’s renown when it graced the cover of Vogue and Mondrian merchandise remains so popular today that you can even buy your own Smeg fridge a la Piet Mondrian (though the jury’s still out on this one...)!
In the case of Louis’ bags, this union of art and fashion, married together by visionary artist, Jeff Koons, is fame meets fame, affluence meets affluence, high art meets… kitsch. Yes, despite the exorbitant price tags (which start at an eye-watering £1,120 for a handbag smaller than your hand), there’s a certain cheapness, an intentional tackiness, to these fun, yet hugely garish arm candies.
They bring to mind a notorious question; does the proliferation of an image increase or diminish the value of the original? If only Leonardo were here today, we’d know if he’d be packing his paintbrushes and artist’s palette into a ‘Keepall’ or a ‘Chainbag’, or suing LV for copyright.
Like House Vuitton, eatsleepdoodle have borrowed one of Monet’s masterpieces, Water Lily Pond, c.1899. Like LV, who no doubt expect you to embrace your inner creativity and style their fabulous handbag with an equally fabulous outfit, we at eatsleepdoodle ask you to discover your inner painter and colour in, design, draw and doodle your own personal Monet masterpiece. And with us, if it more resembles Jackson Pollock than Impressionism, it’s no bother! Just pop your placemat in the machine on a warm or cool wash and the ink completely disappears, so you’re ready to start again!
