A journey to the Seven Modern Wonders of the World!
Join our new intern, Briony, on her journey to 5 of the 7 Modern Wonders of the World, and colour them in on your new eatsleepdoodle gift as we travel... it's time to get stuck in!
First things first, grab your favourite eatsleepdoodle world map product. Maybe it’s bedtime – grab your pens, hop in and get creative on your pillow case or duvet cover! Hang on – do I hear those fateful words ‘Can someone lay the table, please?!’. Quick, grab your world map placemats or tablecloth and get to work! Dad’s birthday? Find your map wrapping paper and make the present that little bit more exciting… Perhaps you’re about to start school? Get that new world map backpack out and show off those doodling skills to your friends!
Wonder #1) Machu Picchu, Peru
This INCREDIBLE place is at the top of 1,800 steps, in the highest mountains of Peru! It was where the Incas used to rule nearly 600 years ago, until the Spaniards arrived! I climbed the steps (exhausting!) at 5am to arrive there first, and admired the stunning views with my pet alpaca…
Fun fact: It was only discovered 107 years ago!
Wonder #2) Colosseum, Rome
If you want to know about the Colosseum, here’s your expert. I was lucky enough to live next door for 4 years! It is a beautiful structure, and inside you can just imagine the Roman gladiators taking on a lion in a fierce battle… If you visit today, there are plenty of ‘gladiators’ to make the whole experience more authentic.
Fun fact: It is the largest amphitheatre in the world!
Sadly I haven’t made it to Wonder #3) Petra in Jordan yet… eatsleepdoodle, do I hear that there’s an office trip in order?!
Wonder #4) Christ the Redeemer, Brazil
Well, well, well… what a big statue! Another steep walk (or you could take the escalator, I suppose!) up to Christ the Redeemer gives you a FAB view of the whole city of Rio de Janeiro. The Catholic community spent many years trying to get permission for a religious monument, and it was opened in 1931. The most modern of the Modern Wonders!
Fun fact: It’s the tallest art deco statue in the world, at almost 30m!
Wonder #5) Chichen Itza, Mexico. Oh dear… we’ve reached the other Wonder that I’m yet to visit! Time to move on…
Wonder #6) Taj Mahal, India
They say that if there’s bad weather the night before, the Taj Mahal will have an incredible sunrise. That’s what happened to me, so at 4am I set off ready to be wowed… and it was so misty I couldn’t even see the building! However, when the mist cleared it was one of the most incredible, beautiful places I’ve ever seen.
Fun fact: it is a mausoleum (basically a grave) that an emperor had built for his 3rd wife as a monument of his love.
Wonder #7) Great Wall of China
I hope you’re keeping up with me on our circumnavigation of the globe! We’ve reached our final destination, the Great Wall of China. However, it’s so long we will barely be able to see any of it! The section I visited is only 30 minutes away from the enormous city of Beijing. My favourite part was how I got there: up in a chairlift, down on a toboggan!
Fun fact: The Great Wall of China is over 2,300 years old!
Well there we have it, we’ve done a whirlwind tour of the world. Here are a few questions for you:
1. How many continents have we visited?
2. Which are the oldest and newest Wonders?
3. Which would you most like to visit? (‘Muuuum…there’s still 2 weeks left of summer holiday!!)
Most importantly... keep doodling!
